FAQs

Off-track betting (OTB) refers to wagering on a horse race while not being on-site at the racetrack. This can be done at a licensed OTB location or, more easily, via an online horse racing betting site. Your bet is added to the pari-mutuel pool, as are the bets made at the track, and you receive the same real odds from anywhere.

The horse racing program is the guide to the day's races. It provides a brief history of each horse in the race, including the type of race, distance, track surface, purse, and types of bets offered. It also displays the owner, trainer, jockey, pedigree, past race record, and earnings for each horse.

An advance deposit wagering (ADW) system is where you deposit money into your account before you place a real-money pari-mutuel bet at a track anywhere in the country.

18+. Pari-mutuel horse betting is only available to bettors aged 18 and older in New York.

Horse racing is held year-round in the U.S., and various tracks host races throughout the year. The Triple Crown kicks off in spring, followed by star-studded summer meets, most notably at Del Mar in California and Saratoga Race Course in New York. The Breeders' Cup wraps up the championship season in late October or early November. The live races at Batavia Downs are called harness racing and usually take place from summer to winter.

Yes. You can legally bet on the Kentucky Derby in New York via licensed ADW platforms.

A Daily Double is a multi-race wager that involves selecting the winner of both races in a day. Multiple horses may provide multiple winners in each race, but know that the more horses you add, the more expensive the ticket will be.

An Exacta bet is a bet that you place when you select two horses that will finish in the first two positions in the correct order. An Exacta is different from a Quinella in that you must guess the exact order of the horses finishing the race.

A Quinella is simple: choose two horses to come in 1st and 2nd place. If those two are the first two in the top two (either way), you win. It is one of the easiest exotic bets to make in racing and is a logical progression from straight win, place, and show bets.

A Trifecta is a wager that involves picking the first, second, and third-place finishers in that order. You can "box" them by placing a few horses in mind without deciding the exact finish order, which will increase the number of combinations and thus the cost of the ticket.
